2005-2006 Co-Presidents Dianne and Phil Lowry present a check for $1955.00 to Board Chairman, Don Goldman, on behalf of the Dallas Irish American Society. The money was raised through a raffle and live auction, which took place at the annual Shamrocks and Stars Ball held on March 11th at the Tower Club in Dallas. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the IAS members and local businesses who donated items for this worthy cause. We want to recognize Sheila Dohm, long-time IAS member, who organized the raffle and auction. Last, but not least, we are so appreciative of all the IAS members and their friends who gave generously on that special night by buying raffle tickets and bidding on auction items.

The Arthritis Foundation provides services to more than 250 callers in North Texas each month. These services include: helping people find a rheumatologist and locate a nearby exercise site in addition to providing materials that explain various arthritic conditions as well as methods of dealing with different aspects of the disease. The Arthritis Foundation also trains instructors to teach land exercise and aquatics programs at twenty-four sites in the Dallas area. Other services provided include advocating on behalf of people with arthritis on both state and federal levels, and raising awareness about the disease through special events like the Arthritis Walk and health fairs. The Arthritis Foundation also provides $500,000 in funding for researchers at UT Southwestern.

"The Eyes of Texas"

All eyes are on IAS member Don Shannon as he belts out "The Eyes
of Texas" at the finale of the Chieftains Concert in Austin, Jan 22nd.
The UT baseball cap goes very well with that kilt!

imageOn Saturday, October 22nd, the Irish American Society participated in the first Annual Plano International Festival. It was held at Haggard Park in old downtown Plano on a beautiful fall day. The festival commenced with an International parade in which the participants wore native costumes and carried flags from all over the world. Throughout the day, performers entertained people with native dances and songs. Tables were set up throughout the park on which traditional items from the respective countries were displayed. The IAS displayed many items including Waterford Crystal, Belleek China and books and brochures about Ireland. We had a very busy day entertaining questions about Ireland and the IAS. Many thanks to Margaret and Jim Graham, Linda Murphy, Maggie Noone and Dianne and Phil Lowry for their volunteer efforts on what proved to be a fun, educational day for many.
