Things to do in Dallas

So you have your Aunty Mary in from Donegal and she's already been to South Fork and the Kennedy museum. Now what?  Below are a  few suggestions from some of our members.

Cead mil failte, ya’ll!

Welcome to Dallas, home to more than a quarter-million people with Irish surnames.

This city of about 2 million was established in 1841 by John Neely Bryan – the Neely and Bryan families both came from Ireland -- at the fork of a river on the Republic of Texas frontier. Bryan set up a trading post on the prairie to deal with local Indians and the region’s few settlers. (That trading post foreshadowed what may be Dallas’ most enduring and best-known attribute: shopping.) At 165 years old, Dallas is young by European standards, but it is rich in history – wild west, oil wildcatting, rough-and-tumble commerce – and foresight – cutting-edge technology, communications, medical advances, to name a few.

For extensive information about the city and its many attractions, please visit lifelong Dallasite Gil Glover’s comprehensive Web site and the links he provides: www.gilglover.com.

You'll see millions of dollars being printed during a tour and the process the money goes through. The free, 45-minute guided tours are available Monday through Friday. Tour features include displays and exhibits showing the history of U.S. paper currency, the production process and its technology, an informative 15-minute film of the production process, a quarter-mile long elevated walkway tour overlooking the currency production floor, the Moneyfactory Gift Shop, and three live demonstration exhibits; a turn-of-the century spider press, a mutilated currency redemption desk, and an engraver’s bench.

Pocket Sandwich Theater

Hidden away in a corner of the Mockingbird Central Plaza Shopping Center on Mockingbird Lane, the PST is a great place to enjoy some hilarious comedies, zany melodramas, musicals and the occasional drama. The intimate setting lets you get up close and personal with the cast, but be prepared to dodge the flying popcorn - or just join in the fun. It's a great place to take people from out of town, have a good old laugh while enjoying a meal and drink.

Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau

This richly diverse city offers a thriving culinary scene, leading arts district, countless luxury accommodations, professional sports, trendy entertainment districts and endless shopping opportunities.
