Irish Person of the year, Ken Fleming 1988

Tracing his roots to County Meath, Kenneth R. Fleming has been chosen as Dallas Irishman of the Year in recognition of his significant contributions to the awareness of the Irish culture and its heritage. Fleming will preside as Honorary Chairman of Irish Fest, as well as serving as Grand Marshall for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

As a member of the popular group Tinker’s Dam, Fleming made note of the interest in Irish music and organized the “First Texas Ceili” in March of 1988. Surpassing all expectation, the Ceili blossomed into the North Texas Irish Festival. Ken Fleming is a founder of the Southwest Celtic Music Association, a non-profit organization devoted to the performance and promotion of Celtic music and largely responsible for the resurgence of traditional music through the region, as well as the originator of the show “Celtic Crossroads” on KNON radio.

Soon to complete a degree in public relations at the University of Texas at Arlington, Fleming, a virtuoso musician, still finds time to exercise his talents, performing with his wife Peggy.

Ken Fleming has distinguished himself in the cultural community for over six years, leaving an indelible imprint with his major contributions towards preserving the wonderful music and traditions of Ireland. With his dedication, energy and enthusiasm, he represents the true spirit of the Irish people.
